What really is under the hood of Apple's new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus?

Apple has finally launched their latest flagship for 2014, their all new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple has completely revamped their iPhone in the design department and that can be easily noticed but what goes under the hood is something that makes us all anxious. So ifixit.com sent their Teardown team all the way to Melbourne, Australia to get the first look inside the new iPhone 6. How will the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus fare in the Phone repairability ratings? Lets find out!

General details:

  • First major re-design of I-Phone in 2 years
  • General appearance has changed
  • Position of power button re-positioned from top-right of phone to upper-right hand side of phone.

  • Size of phone: 138.1 mm by 67 mm
  • 4.7 inch retina display
  • Screen Resolution: 1334 by 750 
  • Pixel Density: 326 ppi
  • Thinner phone: 6.9 mm thick
  • Mass: 129 grams

  • Li-Po Battery: 3.98 volts, 1810 mAh (6.91 Wh)

Features:

  • Front camera is a 1.2 Megapixel “FaceTime” camera with “Burst Selfie” mode
  • Rear facing camera has 8 Megapixels with f 2.2 Aperture Size.
  • Rear facing camera has face detection auto-focus feature
  • 64 bit A8 SoC (System on chip) as processor
  • 1 gigabyte of RAM
  • MP-67B gyroscope and accelerometer sensor device
  • 16 GB Sandisk NAND flash storage
  • NXP 65V10 NFC communications device

Teardown:

  • Pentalobe screwdriver required to remove screw at bottom of phone
  • “iSclack” tool to detach screen
  • “Touch ID” cable repositioned in both I-Phone 6 and 6-Plus 
  • Disconnect battery after removing battery connector bracket
  • Battery adhesive tab allows easy removal of battery
  • If pulled wrongly, battery may become difficult to remove
  • Display assembly holds front facing camera, earpiece (speaker) and home button and display
  • Front facing camera and earpiece speaker removed using tweezers
  • Rear facing camera can be removed as well
  • Logic board can then be removed
  • Main speaker assembly can be removed after taking out screws
  • “Lightning” connector and headphone jack on same cable which is screwed and glued to rear of phone case 
  • Power button and volume button cable is glued to rear of phone case as well

Repairability scores

  • I-Phone 6 score: 7/10 (Should be easy to repair)
  • Display assembly comes out first
  • Battery straightforward to access
  • Fingerprint sensor cable re-routed 
  • However, proprietary Pentalobe screws still used
  • Apple doesn’t share repair information
