6 Tips on Optimizing Your Android Device Performance

I love old school mobile phones like Nokia 3210 or 3310. I’ve used it for a number of years and it seldom gives me problem, like phone freeze or unable to send SMS (unless I’m out of prepaid. :P ). It gets the job done; sending SMS, making calls and I never have to worry about battery life.

Back to the year 2014, not having a smartphone puts you at disadvantages especially when you are in business. Smartphone make your life and business convenient in a lot of ways but sometime it doesn’t perform as what we expect it to do. So how does one optimize their android device performance?

1.    Know your device
First thing to know is what chip it uses and which revision number it is and whether the WiFi component compatible…..well, we don’t expect for you to know this much but if you are, I salute you! :salute: ☺ It’s good enough for you to know how much memory and what type of storage your device have; internal and external. This is really an important thing to know if you want to really optimize your device performance.

2.    Don’t be an App-aholic!
No offence intended. With more than 1 million apps ready in the Google Play store and lot of cool apps coming each day, some people can’t resist to try out and install everything there is. While it’s fine to install and test out the apps but just make sure that you removed them once you have done testing or when you are not using it anymore. Feeling bloated after eating too much is not really a nice feeling isn’t it? Same goes to your device. If you “bloated” your device with apps, of course it will not be feeling well too.

3.    Widgets anyone? (psst…not you)
Widgets are an extension of an app which you can put on your home screen to provide information on things like weather, latest email and favorite’s contacts. While it might not be a full app, it’s still consuming your device memory and processing time and it’s always running on the background compared to a normal app, which only consuming your resource when the apps is actually running. Keep your widgets to a minimum and you will be a happy customer I guarantee.

4.    Choose your theme/animation carefully
I love theme. It provides us the ability to personalize the look and feel on the Android to our preference but be warned that some theme apps doesn’t work well on some devices. Some theme also provides custom animations to enhance the user experience when interacting with the home screen. Remember that theme is also an app and since you see it whenever you interact with your home screen, it’s also means that it’s running all the time on the background. Choose your theme carefully and my advice just don’t go overboard with the animations especially when you have a live wallpaper ;)

5.    Loose the notifications
Similar to how Widget works, notification always run a service on the background to watch for any event to trigger the notifications. For example, your WhatsApp have 1 process and 1 service always running on the background. The WhatsApp service is the one that watch for the trigger such as new WhatsApp message and notify you on the new message at the top of your home screen. A lot of apps provide these functions. If you don’t really need them, disabled it and you can do it in the apps. In turn, you will have better performing device, more battery life and less buzzing!

6.    Make room for memory
I mentioned a few times on the points above, apps eat memory. When your device starts to feel sluggish and sometime freeze, you know that your device is out of memory. So how do we make room for more memory? Well, the points above should be enough to help you started but if you need further memory optimization, there are a lot of apps out there that can help you with this. Look for keyword such Speed Booster, Task Killer or App Cleaner in the Google Play Store and you will be presented with numerous options. Install, test out and choose whichever suits you and your device the best. Good luck
