Cover the Screen

The first thing you should do in case of a broken iPhone 3GS screen is to cover it with a scratch resistant film, like the ScratchStopper for Artwizz which is specifically made for iOS applications. Get the Parts

Unbolt the Casing

Turn off the iPhone 3GS and remove the Subscriber Identity Module card. Now remove the 2 screws on the bottom. This may take some effort and you'll also need a tool to separate the metal frame. When pulling up the screen, be as cautious as possible, because it's connected with cables.

Next, remove the base with a small pry tool or your fingers. After removing connectors 1 and 2, use the same tool to flip the handle and remove the ribbon from connector 3.

Take out the LCD Assembly

Open the black tape on the edges of the frame. You should use tweezers to do that. Next, open the 5 screws in front of you, with the one at the top of the assemblage alongside the connecting cables. Be as gentle as possible to remove the LCD, and it'll automatically slide out.

Remove the Broken Glass

This is the most complex part. Use any sharp tool to remove the glass as cautiously as possible. Since it's broken, the screen won't come out in a single piece and you'll have to remove the remaining pieces as well.

Fix in the New Screen

To bring in the replacement, discard the old adhesive completely and bring in the new double-sided adhesive on the frame. Remove the backing. Insert the new glass, making sure that the cables pass throughout the gap in the frame.

Lastly, reassemble the telephone by simply reversing the steps used to open it. Your iPhone is now restored!
