Cellphone has become an integral part of our life. We practically can’t live without it anymore. I mean, we have all those interesting and entertaining mobile apps installed on it. Then, there are our social accounts to look after. This is the very reason why most companies now are diving in to create a mobile app.
According to experts, around 90% Americans, mostly teens, can be classified as cellphone addicts. The surveys, however, show a lower percentage but that’s because we don’t admit that we’re addicted to cellphones. It’s completely normal to check it after a few minutes. What if we miss an important notification?
Sadly, experts and researchers have a different viewpoint on our slight dependence on our cellphones. They claim that if a person sleeps after checking his/her cellphone and the first thing he/she does after waking up is to check it, then we have a case of addiction.
They don’t stop just there. Dr. David Greenfield, the director of the Center for Internet and Technology Addiction, adds more to it. He says that the behavior of cellphone addicts is exactly like that of a smoker. Because they spend nearly every minute of their life near their cellphones and find it difficult to part with it even when going to bed.
Here are some signs that a cellphone addict shows:
1. Lower sleep period
According to a recent study, an average college student uses his/her cellphone for up to 9 hours. They get much lesser sleep in a day than that.
In fact, studies reveal that the amount of time you spend sleeping varies inversely with the amount of time you spend looking at your cellphone’s screen. So, if you’re having trouble getting sufficient sleep, check your cellphone habits. Some, would even go to the extent of jailbreaking their phones to get more space and customizations so that they will be able to seamlessly use their phone in all conditions.
2. Spending less time in social activities
James Roberts says that heavy cellphone users often tend to have larger social conflicts. However, no amount of interference with their social activities and relations can stop them from using their cellphone. Roberts is the lead author of a study conducted on cellphone addicts published in Journal of Behavioural Addictions.
3. Using cellphone to lift your mood
Do you find your cellphone as a good entertainment and companion? Sounds like you might be addicted to it. According to Greenfield, cellphone addicts use it as if it’s a drug. Whether they are bored, tired, lazy, angry, or lonely, they find their cellphone as the best solution to all their worries.
4. Checking everything through your cellphone
What kind of contents does your cellphone have? Contacts, books, music, games, email apps and more. What will happen if you lose your cellphone for a week? What will it cost you?
You know you’re an addict when you need the phone to even check on the weather. Or making to-list on your phone app rather than writing it down on a piece of paper like the old fashion way.
5. Giving your cellphone a bit more importance than necessary
A typical cellphone addict will keep their cellphone’s needs in mind even when buying new clothes. Texting while walking or even crossing the road is another fine example of cellphone addiction than to care for safety. It is not a surprise even that even adults could throw tantrums when their cellphone slowed down or is jammed.
